This Cannes Film Festival winning masterpiece from African cinema's fiery founding father, 81-year-old Ousmane Sembene, is a rousing polemic against the practice of female circumcision. Though it sounds like rough sledding, the film is a vibrant, colorful portrait of modern Africa as well as a universal political cry for women's rights. The action is set in a small rural village where a strong-willed mother decides to shield her teenage daughter from mutilation, setting off a tense battle of wills. Despite the serious subject matter, Sembene finds room for humor, music, inspirational characters and some beautiful scenery. In Jula and French with English subtitles. 124 minutes
