The Big Red One

Tough-guy filmmaker Samuel Fuller (Pickup on South Street, Underworld U.S.A., The Naked Kiss) turned autobiographical for this epic World War II drama. Newly remastered and restored (with a full hour of footage cut from its original 1980 release), this is considered one of the best, most realistic war movies ever shot. A sergeant (Lee Marvin) tries to keep his men (Mark Hamill and Robert Carradine among them) alive during their monumental push from the shores of North Africa to the heart of Europe. It still seems a tad old-fashioned, but this version drives home Fuller's idea of innocence lost amid the B-movie bravado of war. 163 minutes
