Despite the most wooden efforts of star Keanu Reeves, this adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic book Hellblazer is pretty damned entertaining. Reeves plays the titular supernatural investigator, who's stuck in a war between Heaven and Hell. The story is rather simplistic, with a girl to rescue, a sidekick to get bumped off and a bad guy to destroy, but the casting is clever (Tilda Swinton and Peter Stormare are perfect in their roles) and the direction visionary without being distracting. The result is a creepy supernatural film noir that might just leave audiences praying for a sequel. 121 minutes R.
