Untold Scandal

You just can't go wrong adapting Les Liaisons Dangereuses to the big screen. This Korean film, set during the country's aristocratic 18th-Century Chosun Dynasty, is certainly no exception, keeping faithful to the book's randy plot line and rancorous wit. Immaculately photographed, lushly designed and damn sexy to boot, Untold Scandal follows the traditional story to the letter (a decadent countess, a virginal widow, a soon-to-be-repentant womanizer and a very naughty bet). Director E J-Yong doesn't give the film quite the operatic punch of previous versions, but he nails the hypocritical elegance of the characters and adds a religious element that gives the whole narrative a deeper shade social relevance. In Korean with English subtitles. 124 minutes
