This controversial German drama has Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara), the final stenographer for Adolf Hilter, relating her experiences during the final days of Der Führer (played by Bruno Ganz). The film does humanize Hitler a bit, but it clearly details the horrific extremes those around him went to to fulfill his last cruel orders. Action is confined largely to the concrete corridors of Hitler's bunker, but the drama is big, bold and emotionally affecting. Ganz is especially good as the feeble, mad dictator who refuses to admit he's lost big time. The film gets progressively bleaker (how could it not?), but it occasionally offers up some of the absurd gallows humor of Catch-22 or Slaughterhouse-Five.
