Based on a book by supermarket checkout stand Shakespeare Clive Cussler, this globehopping adventure contains enough plot elements for five Indiana Jones movies and a couple of James Bond flicks. Seems that world famous explorer Dirk Pitt (Matthew McConaughey) is in West Africa looking for a sunken Civil War battleship filled with gold. (It's best if you stop asking questions right here and now). Along the way, he rescues a beautiful U.N. scientist (Penélope Cruz), who's investigating how a ruthless African dictator's nuclear waste program is mutating the red tide, causing a plague of cannibalism and threatening all life on Earth. Taken in the right spirit, this film is like your first car--an adventurous Saturday afternoon ride that pretty much threatens to fall apart at any moment. 127 minutes PG-13.
