The first film to be shot in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, this bittersweet adventure tale has a rural villager racing to get to the capital city to pick up his visa. With that miraculous document, he can finally travel to the land of his dreams: America. Along the course of his journey, he picks up a few fellow journeymen, including a Buddhist priest, an elderly paper maker and a beautiful young girl. In an attempt to talk our protagonist out of fleeing to the West, the monk relates a legend about a would-be magician who falls in love with a married woman. Both tales are rather simplistic, but--viewed as one big, scenic allegory--the film delivers wit, emotion and a touch of magic. In Dzongkha with English subtitles.108 minutes Unrated.
