Shadow of the Vampire

Willem Dafoe steals the show with his Oscar-worthy turn as a method-acting vampire in E. Elias Merhige's subtle satire of moviemaking excess. Part historical biopic, part black comedy, this film fest hit posits the idea that famed German filmmaker F. W. Murnau (John Malkovich) was so obsessed with creating the perfect horror film that he hired a real bloodsucker (Dafoe) to star in his 1922 horror classic Nosferatu. This one probably plays best among film congnoscenti familiar with the Murnau original. Merhige occasionally lapses into art house pretention, but the lush, art deco cinematography and sly, movie-centric humor are enough to dazzle film-loving audiences. 90 minutes
