America's premiere cinematic fantasist Tim Burton returns to Roald Dahl's original novel for inspiration, largely ignoring the arguably great 1971 film version with which most folks are familiar. The sets are, as expected, simply wondrous. Burton's surreal sensibilities fit well into this surprisingly cheerful, candy-coated fantasy world. Some might find the multiple musical numbers a bit distracting (and, for some reason, badly mixed), but the film is, all-in-all, a sweet treat. 115 minutes PG.
