In the Yorkshire countryside, a working class tomboy and a bored rich girl spend their long, slow summer laying about, becoming best friends and occasionally experimenting with their budding teenage sexuality. Languorously paced but emotionally rich, the film isn't exactly an erotic teenage tale. The girls' relationship is more like a naive crush born of boredom than a passionate affair. There are a few bitter secrets waiting to be revealed late in the game, but director Pawel (Last Resort) Pawlikowski's strength lies in his ability to paint low-key, observational portraits and to find the sympathies that bind people of varying backgrounds together. 86 minutes R.
