Saving Face

Joan Chen ("Twin Peaks," The Hunted) stars in this comedy/drama as Ma, a fortysomething Chinese widow who brings shame on her too-traditional family for getting pregnant out of wedlock. With nowhere to turn, she shows up on her successful daughter's New York doorstep looking for help. Daughter Wil (Michelle Krusiec) does her best to help mom look for a substitute hubby, but she's hiding a few secrets of her own. (Turns out Wil is a lesbian.) The film is your typical tradition-versus-modern-world, culture clash ethnic wedding comedy (think The Wedding Banquet, think My Big Fat Greek Wedding). Still, the lightweight humor and appealing stars keep things entertaining. In Mandarin and English with English subtitles. 91 minutes
