Doing Time, Doing Vipassana

This sleeper hit documentary explores an experimental program by India's inspector general of prisons to try out the titular form of meditation at one of her country's worst penal colonies. Long considered a hellhole of crime, drugs, violence and abuse, the Tihar facility was crammed with 10,000 detainees. The centuries-old Vipassana practice--which includes a demanding 10-day vow of silence--soon had the inmates acting calmer, less hostile and more hopeful. Impressed with the results, officials eventually expanded the program throughout India. Could such alternative methods of rehabilitation be applied to prisons throughout the world? Watch.
