Happy Endings

Filmmaker Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex) returns with another thorny indie meditation on the art of sexual relations. Multiple, interwoven story lines include an abortion counselor (Lisa Kudrow) blackmailed by a documentary filmmaker (Jesse Bradford), a father (Tom Arnold) who finds himself dating his son's "girlfriend" (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and a man (Steve Coogan) who believes his boyfreind (David Sutcliffe) may have fathered a child with their best friend (Laura Dern). The film bills itself as "a comedy, sort of," but it's mostly a depressing mix of melodrama, sexual confusion and a struggle for happiness that may never come. There are a few standout performances (Gyllenhaal, Arnold--believe it or not), but this isn't as well-formed as The Opposite of Sex. 128 minutes
