Werner Herzog, still movie-mad and plugging away at 63, goes the documentary route for this devastating true story. Subjects Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard were a pair of environmental activists working to save grizzly bears in Alaska. Tragically, they were killed by the very animals they were trying to save. Treadwell is the perfect Herzog protagonist, a mad dreamer whose obsession leads directly to his downfall. Combing through more than 100 hours of video footage (most shot by Treadwell himself), Herzog fashions a portrait of a tragic, foolish, romantic and deeply compelling hero. 103 minutes R.
