When people talk about the great, gritty crime films of the '70s, this is the kind of thing they're talking about. This oft-imitated 1974 crime caper (Reservoir Dogs, for example) features a gang of non-photogenic toughs (Robert Shaw, Martin Balsam, Hector Elizondo, Earl Hindman) who hijack a New York City subway and threaten to kill one passenger a minute until a $1 million ransom is paid. It's up to an equally non-photogenic transit cop (Walter Matthau) to stop them. Totally nail-biting stuff. Double-featured with Emperor of the North. 104 minutes R.
