Terry Gilliam (Time Bandits, Brazil)treads a fair way into Tim Burton territory with this gothy little fairy tale. Seems that the fabled storytellers The Brothers Grimm (Matt Damon and Heath Ledger) were actually a couple of con-men who bilked European peasents out of their money by combating phony ghosts and monsters. One fine day, however, our heroes encounter a supernatural threat that is all too real. The film plays out, mostly, like an 19th-century version of Ghostbusters with our slapstick heroes employing all sorts of outlandish equipment to combat evil. The film is Gilliam's most commercial, but lacks the sort of earthy weirdness that denotes his earlier work. 118 minutes PG-13.
