The Hole

It's seven days before the 21st century begins and the rain still won't let up in Taiwan. A strange disease is reaching epidemic proportions, but the tenants of a run-down public housing project refuse to heed the evacuation warnings. A plumber has been sent to fix a leak in Hsiao Kang's apartment, but instead he leaves a gaping hole in the middle of the living room. Through the hole, Kang spots his downstairs neighbor, a mysterious woman who stockpiles toilet paper and dreams of singing and dancing in 1950s musicals. A dreary but deftly realized allegory from director Tsai Ming-Liang. Originally part of the international "2000 As Seen By ..." collection. In Taiwanese with English subtitles. 95 minutes
