Actor Liev Schreiber (The Manchurian Candidate) turns filmmaker to adapt Jonathan Safran Foer's cult novel. Elijah Wood headlines as an obsessive young Jewish American man who goes on a quest to find the Ukrainian woman who saved his grandfather during World War II. What starts out as a wacky comedy about small-town European oddballs quickly shifts gears to become an emotional drama about the aftereffects of the Holocaust. The film is delightful, but a lot of the better moments get buried in whiplash tonal shifts. In English and Ukrainian with English subtitles. 100 minutes PG-13.
