Hipster cameraslinger Greg Araki (The Doom Generation, Nowhere) turns in a surprisingly emotional coming-of-age tale with this odd ensemble drama based on Scott Heim's cult novel. Story circles around two small-town Kansas teens, one of whom (Brady Corbet, Thirteen) believes he was abducted by aliens as a kid. The other (the increasingly great Joseph Gordon-Levitt, "3rd Rock From the Sun") is a jaded young hustler picking up tricks and setting his sights on New York City. The two seemingly unrelated stories both center around the idea of childhood abuse and converge in a powerful climax. Haunting, harrowing and--in moments--quite beautiful. Possibly Araki's best.99 minutes R.
