Like Road to Perdition before it, this rough, moody crime film is based on a very un-comic-book-like comic book. Director David Cronenberg (Crash, Videodrome) sheds his usual creepy surrealism to spin this tale of a small-town hubby named Tom Stall (The Lord of the Rings' Viggo Mortensen), who kills a pair of criminals in self-defense at his peaceful little diner. So how exactly is this smiling family man such an efficient killer? A wave of publicity puts our hero in the spotlight and attracts the attentions of Fogerty (Ed Harris), a sinister figure from Tom's mysterious past. Cronenberg and company have crafted a thoughtful, exciting and totally accessible treatise on violence and what it does to our culture. 96 minutes R.
