Yi Yi (A One and a Two ...)

This slow, patient study of a modern Taiwanese family in transition is a real surprise. Director Edward Yang introduces us to a typical middle-class clan in Taipei. NJ Tian is struggling to keep his small computer firm from going bankrupt. His wife is suffering a minor breakdown, his mother-in-law has just had a stroke, his brother-in-law is getting married, his daughter is getting her first rough lessons in love and NJ has just bumped into his childhood sweetheart. Over the course of this intimate epic, Yang shows us life in all its minutae. Nothing heavy or tense here, just a probing look at everything little thing between birth and death. Not exactly a rousing tale, but an eminently accessible, pause-inducing character study. In Taiwanese, Mandarin, Japanese and English. 173 minutes
