Long unseen, heavily censored and frequently banned, director Walerian Borowczyk's feverish 1975 take on the Beauty and the Beast myth is finally available in its full, uncut, hedonistic glory. Perverse, surreal and occasionally quite fun, the film follows an American heiress to a French estate where she is soon beset by the priapic beast of the title. At times it's hard to tell if Borowczyk's vision is horrific, pornographic, beautiful or just one really screwed-up mixture of Luis Buñuel and Benny Hill. In any case, you won't soon forget it. In French with English subtitles. 93 minutes NC-17.
