Johnny Depp stars in this controversial drama about the infamous second Earl of Rochester, a 17th-Century poet who drank and fornicated himself into an early grave. Depp throws himself into the role, giving it his Oscar-grabbing best, but the film is a pretty grotty example of historical realism. Wallowing in the mud, blood, pus, human excrement and syphilis of the Restoration era isn't as much fun as it sounds. Depp's disgusting performance is certainly admirable, but not very likable. Samantha Morton and John Malkovich are along for the ride. 114 minutes R.
