Patricia Clarkson, Campbell Scott and Peter Sarsgaard star in this twisty romantic drama by acclaimed playwright Craig Lucas (Longtime Companion, Prelude to a Kiss). The story has a struggling screenwriter (Sarsgaard) peddling a homosexual romance to a slick movie studio executive (Scott). The exec offers to buy the screenplay, but only if one of the characters is changed to a female. Our protagonist agrees, partly because he needs the money and partly because he becomes romantically involved with the studio exec. Making things even more complicated is the executive's wife (Clarkson), who has her own odd relationship with the writer. The story gets mighty melodramatic, and the ending is wobbly as hell--which is kind of a bummer, because the actors are simply born for these roles. 101 minutes R.
