This actually started out as a movie by Mel Brooks. Then it got turned into a Broadway musical. Now it has been turned back into a movie. With songs. The story is identical to the original, with sleazy producer Nathan Lane and nebbish accountant Matthew Broderick conspiring to come up with the worst musical in history (Springtime for Hitler) as a tax dodge. Broderick and Lane just can't match the comic timing of Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, and the film relies of a lot of very silly humor. But, when it reaches for a level of Busby Berkeley-style excess, this surprisingly old-fashioned musical can be a lot of fun. 140 minutes PG-13.
