The Passenger

Michelangelo Antonioni's 1975 classic has long been out of circulation. Now it returns--recut, remastered and fully restored to the director's original vision. Jack Nicholson plays a dissatisfied television reporter stuck in the middle of the African desert looking for an elusive guerilla hideout. Unable to find his way (literally and figuratively), our protagonist adopts the identity of a dead Englishman and sparks up an affair with Maria Schneider (good move, there). The film has its enigmatic moments, but it's pretty profound in an early-'70s art house way. 123 minutes
