Billed as "a true story," this Australian-exported slasher flick has about as much in common with reality as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (not much really). Freshman filmmaker Greg McLean gets all the credit in the world for hiring credible actors and giving them plenty of time to establish their characters. Hardcore gore fans might find themselves growing impatient, however, as fully half the film unfolds before anything sinister happens. Then, it's pretty much standard-issue: Attractive young people on a road trip break down in the middle of nowhere and are stalked by a well-armed psycho killer. The acting and directing are first-rate, but the script of this sadistic slasher film is purely paint-by-numbers--right up until the abrupt, unsatisfying ending.99 minutes R.
