The White Countess

James Ivory (of Merchant/Ivory fame) directs another lush period romance. This one is set in '30s Shanghai, where a blind American diplomat (Ralph Fiennes) develops a curious relationship with a young Russian refugee (Natasha Richardson) who works odd jobs to support her dead husband's aristocratic family. This literate but meandering drama is based on the book by Kazuo Ishiguro (who also penned Merchant/Ivory's Remains of the Day). 138 minutes PG-13.
