This offbeat, impressively lensed debut film from Frenchy Lucile Hadzihalilovic peers into the inner workings of a surreal boarding school nestled in a dense European forest. Slow-paced and inarguably "arty," this adaptation of an 1888 symbolist novella by Frank Wedekind plays out a bit like a David Lynch fairy tale. Young girls in color-coded ribbons dance, attend recitals and go to charm class--all so they can be groomed for ... well, what they're being groomed for isn't exactly clear. But it is kinda creepy. Think Suspiria with more symbolism and less blood. Hadzihalilovic lingers long and hard on the psycho-sexual elements, but never quite gets around to telling us what's what.115 minutes Unrated.
