Don't Come Knocking

Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire) directs, Sam Shepard (Paris, Texas) writes (and stars). Jessica Lange, Tim Roth, Sarah Polley and Eva Marie Saint are along for the ride. Shepard plays a washed-up Western star who rides away from a Utah film shoot to find the offspring he never knew he had with an ex-girlfriend (inviting certain comparisons with Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers). After a lifetime of drinking, running around with women and being generally irresponsible, our antihero is suddenly looking for some redemption. The script doesn't make this feel very well-earned, as our protagonist rarely demonstrates any redeeming qualities. The cast is good, but the erratic script often asks them to give some unnatural emotional reactions. 125 minutes
