Small-town British whimsy has, of late, become a genre unto itself. Like Brassed Off, The Full Monty, Waking Ned Devine, Saving Grace and countless other before it, this one's a quirky little charmer about the kooky residents of a small English town whose lives are turned upside down by ... in this case, the arrival of the National British Hairdressing Championships. Alan Rickman (Die Hard, Truly Madly Deeply) is a former champ who retired from the biz after his wife (Natasha Richardson) dumped him for another woman (Rachel Griffiths). Can husband, wife, lesbian girlfriend and son (Josh Hartnett) reconcile in time to win the intense hairdressing competition? What do you think? This one's completely by-the-books, but it's certainly endearing, and a touch of family drama lends some welcome weight to the comic proceedings.
