Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) writes and directs this mid-century modern biopic of '50s pinup queen Bettie Page. Gretchen Mol (Rounders, Cradle Will Rock) grabs her role by the garters, taking Bettie from her innocent nudie model days to her time in the spotlight as the target of a Senate investigation (based on her infamous bondage photos). The film never manages to dig all that deep into the social or psychological ramifications of Page's life and work, but Mol (like Page) leaves a lingering afterimage. Harron's clever black-and-white/color photography perfectly captures the mood of this highly conflicted period in American sexuality. 91 minutes R.
