This amazing documentary takes us into the mind of genius/manic-depressive/singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston. Long a figure of cult worship, Johnston has been writing and recording his own freaky cool albums since the '80s. The film explores Johnston's life--from reclusive teen to outsider artist to minor celeb to highly medicated middle-ager. What emerges is a portrait of artistic love and determination, uninhibited by mainstream acceptability or mental stability. You don't have to be a fan of Johnston's music to appreciate what an interesting and passionate figure he really is. 110 minutes PG-13.
