Liv Ullman continues to build on her career as a director by taking on another of hubby Ingmar Bergman's scripts. This wrenching family drama explores a long-distant act of adultery and the life-shattering repercussions thereof. As always, Berman is dwelling on the assorted emotional woes of the human condition, and he does so here with subtlety and veracity. The film's austere, reflective look at life, love and relationships is not what you'd call fast-paced modern cinema, but fans of Bergman's past works (Persona, Wild Strawberries, Scenes from a Marriage) will know what they're getting into. In Swedish with English subtitles. 145 minutes
