The Lost City

Actor Andy Garcia directs this beautiful, if long-winded, love letter to pre-Revolutionary Cuba. Based on a curious saga by Cuban writer and film critic Guillermo Cabrera Infante, the film concentrates on one well-to-do-family full of intellectuals, revolutionaries and businessmen as they try to weather the winds of change. Garcia himself plays the family's favorite son, a Havana nightclub owner who ends up having an affair with his brother's wife. The film uses its small budget to fine effect, but Garcia spends too much time aping Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca (right down to the white tux), and Infante's script offers up far too many subplots. 143 minutes R.
