This documentary is an in-depth look at the New York Times crossword puzzle editor Will Shortz and his legion of loyal fans. Among the cadre of celebrity worshippers weighing in are Ken Burns, Bill Clinton, Bob Dole and Jon Stewart. It seems an unlikely subject, but by centering itself around the 28th annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, the film generates the sort of slow-building tension we saw in the similar Spellbound. Director Patrick Creadon adds a lot of visual flair, weaving grids, letters and words in wherever he can. Smart, addictive stuff!94 minutes PG.
