David Holzman's Diary

This "mockumentary" (made long before This is Spinal Tap exploded the genre) was actually booed at its premiere in 1968 when the end credits revealed its faux nature, so convincing was its re-creation of reality. L. M. Kit Carson (who's since built a career as a writer/producer) stars as the titular Mr. Holzman, a young hipster filmmaker in New York who decides to record his diary at 24-frames-per-second. As Holzman's personal life begins to crumble, he becomes increasingly obssessed with documenting it. While the film works as a very subtle swipe at the "truth" of cinema verité, it's also a dark and brutally honest (so to speak) character study. 74 minutes
