Heart of the Game

This sporting documentary (narrated by Ludacris) follows the members of the Roosevelt Roughriders, a Seattle high school girl's basketball team who find themselves attached to an unorthodox new coach. The film follows through six seasons, spinning the evolving story of Bill Resler, a quirky University of Washington tax professor who takes over as the school's head coach and uses unusual motivational techniques to boost his team to the top of their division, and Darnelia Russell, a talented player whose racial and economic background clashes with that of her upper-class white teammates. The do-or-die personalities of these two are the film's driving force, but the film struggles a bit to find its narrative, focussing on a few too many story threads before arriving at the requisite inspirational ending. 97 minutes PG-13.
