Though it mixes two tried-and-true genres (the road picture and the dysfunctional family saga), this comedy/drama finds it own unique voice thanks to some low-key direction and a supremely talented cast (Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Steve Carell, Alan Arkin). When little Olive Hoover wins a spot (by default) in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant, her messed-up family is prevailed upon to pile into a rattletrap Volkswagon van and wend its way from Albuquerque to Los Angeles. Along the way, they encounter the recommended daily allowance of squabbling and self-discovery. A keen sense of black humor and steady undercurrent of emotion make this a clever and ultimately gleeful tribute all-American losers. 101 minutes R.
