Toshiro Mifune stars as director Akira Kurosawa's most enduring character, the shabby wandering samurai known as Yojimbo. In order to rid a village of corruption, our antihero pits two rival gangs against one another. The formula, of course, was copied many times--including in Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars and Walter Hill's Last Man Standing. (Although Kurosawa actually borrowed it from Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest.) Still brilliant and wildly entertaining after all these years. In Japanese with English subtitles. 110 minutes
