Magdalena, a teenage girl growing up in the heavily Hispanic Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park gets kicked out of her parents' house on the eve of her 15th birthday because somehow--miraculously, she claims--she's pregnant. Naturally, she moves in with her kind-hearted great-granduncle, a wise old dude who's already taken in Magda's gay cousin. The film blends lightweight family drama with a bit of culture clash as hip, gay Hollywood meets urban-chic, inner city L.A. If only filmmakers Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland (who did the gay film fest fave The Fluffer) had dug a bit deeper beneath the cultural surface of the their zip code. 90 minutes R.
