Matt Dillon stars as Charles Bukowski's alter ego Hank Chinaski in this appropriately sleazy adaptation of Bukowski's semiautobiographical novel (weren't they all?). Since this is based on Bukowski, it's about a guy who hangs out in bars in Los Angeles, gets drunk a lot and occasionally tries to write. Nothing much happens, but it is kind of funny in a bleak, lightless, totally suicidal way. The cast, including Lili Taylor, Fisher Stevens and Marisa Tomei, doesn't look smelly enough. 94 minutes R.
