Wondering why times are missing?

1st Annual Latin American Film Festival

The SouthWest Film Center, SOLAS and The Guild have joined forces to bring us eight brand new cinematic offerings from South of the Border. SWFC (Room 2018 UNM's Center for the Arts building) will present Orfeu (a contemporary retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth set during Brazil's Carnival), The Charcoal People (a documentary highlighting the plight of migrant workers cutting down the Amazonian rainforest for the local steel industry) and Nuyorican Dreams (a bittersweet documentary portrait of a Puerto Rican family struggling to survive in New York). SOLAS (UNM's Dane Smith Hall Room 123) will show Once (the dramatized account of a young girl in a Bueno Aires ghetto passed off to her loan shark uncle following the death of her grandmother), No Nos Tienes: The Students of Guatemala (a documentary covering the role of Guatemalan student movements in resistance to the brutal government death squads of the 1980s), Mas Alla De Los Gritos (a vibrant look at modern-day Latin American punk rock culture in the U.S.) and Zapatista (a slickly produced documentary providing a basic history of the Chiapas uprising). The Guild will screen Amores Perros. (See separate listing.)
