Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean's Eleven) recruits pal George Clooney for this rather authentic recreation of 1940s film noir. Borrowing bits from Casablanca and The Third Man, the black and white film follows an American war correspondent (Clooney) through postwar Berlin. Before long, he's embroiled in international intrigue thanks to his former German mistress (Cate Blanchett, channeling Dietrich). The film looks fantastic (Soderbergh even used vintage cameras and lenses), but the script is too convoluted and self-conscious to work as anything more than a filmbuff experiment. 105 minutes R.
