It's almost impossible to describe this wigged-out Japanese import, a mixture of samurai films, slapstick comedy and absurdist situations. But here goes: A flamboyant yet down-on-their-luck pair of Edo-period samurai blast off onto the open road (on an Easy Rider chopper, of course) to do battle with heroin addiction and ponder the true meaning of life at a faraway shrine. Naturally, a blip in reality finds them thrust into a world where fantasy takes the place of the everyday, and the past merges with the present with disorienting hilarity. Think Monty Python and the Holy Grail crossed with Brokeback Mountain and set somewhere alongside The Wizard of Oz. In Japanese with English subtitles. 124 minutes R.
