Harakiri

This excellent 1962 Japanese film is a touch more thoughtful than your average samurai flick. The film is set in 17th-century Japan, when the Shogunate's dispanding of warrior clans threw thousands of samurai out of work and into poverty. The sotry follows one elderly warrior who seeks admittance to the house of a feudal lord to commit the honorable act of suicide. There, her learns the fate of his son-in-law, a young samurai cruelly abused by the evil lord. This sets in motion a tense drama of revenge. In Japanese with English subtitles. 135 minutes
