Shut Up and Sing

This documentary delves into the controversy surrounding the Dixie Chicks. In the wake of the country music group's notorious 2003 dis of President Bush, the gals took an inordinate amount of flack. Directors Barbara Kopple (Harlan County U.S.A.) and Cecilia Peck show how the backlash against the group transformed the three young performers into outspoken poster girls for free speech. The film explores both the consequences of lead singer Natalie Maines' offhanded remark (Lipton Iced Tea isn't happy!) and the odd way in which music and politics overlap here in America. 93 minutes
