Cate Blanchett is a pottery teacher who has an affair with one of her students. Judi Dench is a spinsterish colleague who, for bitter personal reasons, exposes the relationship. The story is a bit sensationalized, reducing its characters to their basest impulses, but the acting is top-notch and it's fun watching Dench tear into Blanchett. Director Richard Eyre (Iris) would have done well to concentrate a little more on the story's blackly humorous elements rather than the sordid details and questionable psychology. Literate scandalmongers will enjoy themselves, however. 91 minutes R.
