House of Mirth

Gillian Anderson ("X-Files") acquits herself admirably in this deeply depressing adaptation of Edith Warton's vicious excoriation of upper class mores circa 1905. Anderson plays Warton's unfortunate heroine Lily Bart, a 29-year-old New York gal whose unmarried status is starting to send tongues wagging. When her financial situation falls to ruin, she sets out to find the perfect husband. Although it seems a bit mercenary by modern standards, Warton's story clearly exposes the sad social situation in which many late-19th, early-20th century women found themselves. Unfortunately, director Terence Davies (Distant Voices, Still Lives) swamps the whole affair in stiff direction and a somnambulant atmosphere--which only makes the film's dreary, downbeat tone harder to take. 140 minutes
