Cult filmmaker David Lynch shot this nearly 3-hour vanity project himself using a mid-grade digital video camera. Most of the plot and dialogue is improvised utilizing pals like Harry Dean Stanton, Diane Ladd, Nastassja Kinski and William H. Macy. While this nonlinear film noir hallucination sounds daunting, it's actually an intriguing trip. Laura Dern headlines as an actress starring in a drama about an adulterous relationship. In time, she begins an adulterous relationship with her co-star (Justin Theroux), breaking down the walls between actress and character. The film borrows a bit from Mulholland Dr. and is filled with obscuro symbolism, but fans will happily OD on this Lynchian overload. 172 minutes R.
